Schiedam is part of a cohesive, urban network in the west of the Netherlands and is the second-largest city in it after Rotterdam. Schiedam occupies a specific position in this urban network. This is due to good accessibility within the metropolitan region, both by car and by train and subway.

The city is known for its historical center with harbours, and for having the tallest windmills in the world. Schiedam is also well known for the distilleries and malthouses and production of jenever (gin). Through the centuries a strong entrepreneurial culture has always been visible. The city centre and the old industrial estates underwent transformation. The warehouses today are loft conversions with a unique location on the waterfront.

The focus is a new urban area where themes such as innovation, education and climate adaptation gain expression in urban activity, knowledge centres and urban residential environments. Visit Schiedam and meet Program Director Lydia Buist-Izelaar!
